Watershed Management Services
RA Environmental Projects
Catchment management is the applied management of a catchment area aimed at the sustainable delivery of its resources. To achieve this, plans, programmes and projects need to be implemented to sustain and enhance catchment functions that affect the plant, animal, and human communities within a watershed boundary.

Features of a catchment that agencies seek to manage include water supply, water quality, drainage, storm water runoff, water rights, and the overall planning and utilisation of resources. Landowners, land use agencies, storm water management experts, environmental specialists, water use surveyors and communities all play an integral part in the management of a catchment.

But planning together is vital across the landscape - including fire management, vegetation management and catchment management.

Protection of Wetlands in the Cape Floristic Kingdom.

In 2009, The German Government granted the Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area via UNDP and SANparks , R20 million for the protection of biodiversity in Cape Wetlands.

The money was earmarked primarily to capitalize the Nuwejaars Wetlands Protected Environment with a limited amount allocated to management. It was a 14 month project which initiated new thinking and procedure both in the public and private sector with the outcome being a commitment by the land owners in Title Deed to conserve the wetlands biodiversity in perpetuity.
Game was introduced increasing biodiversity while establishing a secondary economy. Hippo were specifically introduced to rehabilitate the wetlands by creating underwater canals to spread water during dry times and maintain peat hydration.
The project was an example of successful cooperation between the public and private sectors. A number of Memoranda of Cooperation between the NWPE and the public and private sector have resulted.

A strong foundation for the development of biodiversity economy has been laid. The potential social contribution that this initiative has will reduce unemployment and poverty in the region.
